A very strong, Magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck Mexico.  The quake struck at a shallow depth of only 23km.

The quake lasted several MINUTES and caused buildings of all sizes to shake violently.   There are already reports of very serious damage to buildings, homes, roads, and infrastructure.  

Social media is already lighting up with reports from locals:

  • Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico: It felt like light air turbulence in a plane, I lightly rocked in my chair, all the hanging pulls on ceiling fans swang. (MMI III (Weak shaking))
  • Cancun, Mexico: 19th floor apartment, chandelier and hanging objects swinging and building swaying slightly (MMI III (Weak shaking))
  • Cholula, Puebla, Mexico: A little wobbly. (MMI III (Weak shaking))
  • Huitzilac, Morelos: No shaking, but at least one full minute of swaying. Friends that are indoors and outdoors both felt it. No damage here, just swaying lights and trees. (MMI V (Moderate shaking))
